Baby Names 2012

The best part besides the fact that the baby is finally here, is naming your little boy/girl something that stands out among the rest, not to mention one that sounds better every time you say it. That's the thing about a name; you wouldn't want to name your kid something that sounds bizarre or one that will have them turn around one day in disbelief at your choice of name.

There was a wedding I'd attended more than a year ago, and the bride's name was, wait for it... Conception! My first thought was, 'Are you kidding me?'. They must've been embarrassed (or probably she was), to have her name up that way, because everywhere you looked and spotted the couples' names in print, hers was not Conception, but 'Conny' - hilarious really.

So before you choose a name that will be your child's identity for years to come, think it over extensively with your partner before making a definitive choice.

How to Choose a Baby Name

Choosing a name for your child isn't an easy task; it requires a lot of brooding, where you have to keep saying it over and over again, for it to sound befitting. Here are some pointers to help ease down on the confusion.
  • When picking a name, first sort it out in your mind about why you like it, and what it is you want your child to signify. Is it an old friend's name? A close someone who passed away? A loved one you promised you'd name your child after? A favorite celebrity, artist or author? Whatever your reasons, just make sure it's something your child will be happy about later.
  • The best names are the ones that you know the meaning of, and the reason as to why you picked it out for him/her in the first place. I've asked people what their names mean, and many don't have a clue! How terrible is it to not know what your name means?
  • Choose something simple yet different; I'm sure you know how annoying it is when someone mispronounces your name. I correct them all the time when it comes to mine; not that I regret having this name one bit. Just choose something a little light on the accent, but by all means choose something you're happy with.
  • Make sure names don't sound feminine for guys, and vice verse for chicks. I know a lot of them who have opposite sex names, and trust me, it's not funny.
Popular Baby Names

When I think about my name, all I can do is sigh in relief. My parents were considering a name like Nilofar (no offense to those out there with the identical name), and my reaction to that was well, not pleasant. We've scoured through lists of baby names and sifted through surveys and popularity rankings for popular baby names that are making it big in the world of newborns today. You'll find here a compiled list of baby names, that you can look through and help yourself to when naming your baby.
